    Accessibility Center Manager-DC Public Library

    Position Details:

    The Center for Accessibility offers audio and braille books for qualified District residents, computers with a variety of assistive technologies, assistance with obtaining sign language interpreters and other accommodations for DC Public Library events, and library service for people who are home-bound. Center for Accessibility staff provide outreach throughout the District for equivalent services and offer support on ensuring appropriate access and accommodation for all District residents with disabilities. The Library’s customers reflect a wide range of socioeconomic, cultural and religious affiliations, including people with disabilities.

    Position Responsibilities:

    Serve as the Library’s lead specialist and advocate on adaptive and accessible services and technologies, and as an advisor and resource on accessibility to library staff and stakeholders. Makes recommendations regarding kinds and levels of services needed to better serve target populations. Serve as head administrator of services and duties that DC Public Library holds as the State Library for the Blind and Handicapped and is responsible for maintaining and enhancing relationships with the National Library Service for the Blind and Handicapped. Together with the Center for Accessibility staff, conceptualize, plan, and carry out accessible services and projects for the Library system. Promote the use of accessible services, advising customers of accessible services, and involving the library in the network of local and national providers. Leverages and collaborates with local network to provide accessible library services to District residents with disabilities. Analyze department workflows and develops process improvements in services such as Dupe on Demand, BARD program and L-STAR Library Service. In collaboration with colleagues, implement a training plan to help staff throughout the system build basic skills for ensuring appropriate access and accommodations for all District residents with disabilities at all library locations. Work as part of the Central Library leadership team to ensure smooth operations of the facility and a positive customer experience throughout the building. Fulfill other Supervisory Librarian duties and responsibilities.

    Qualifications:

    Master’s degree in library science, education or related field required.Minimum of five years of experience working directly, and in person with customers in a public service, library or educational setting, including three years’ experience working with populations with disabilities. Three years experience supervising, developing and evaluating staff with diverse abilities. Three years experience designing and implementing improvements to processes, services, programs and initiatives.Three years experience facilitating and leading trainings on appropriate access and accommodations for staff and customers with disabilities. Three years experience advising on District and federal accessibility requirements, resources that meet accessibility requirements and/or how to enable resources to meet such requirements.
