The Blue Ridge Regional Library (BRRL) Board of Trustees seeks an experienced and dynamic Library Director to enhance and activate the vision of the organization and fully embrace the unique qualities of our three localities that we serve. (see more here)
BRRL serves communities that span three municipalities, two counties and one city with 21 full time and 18 part time staff. Branch locations include one branch and bookmobile serving Patrick County, Three locations in Henry County and the main library serving the City of Martinsville. As a financially independent organization, the Library Director oversees a budget of $2 million. This individual will exhibit integrity, sound financial judgment, and strong leadership abilities while fostering a collaborative and adaptable workplace culture. Success in this role requires the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders, apply core public library principles, respond to community needs, and sustain positive, professional relationships with staff, public officials, and the broader community.
Key upcoming initiatives for this position include guiding the library’s future through strategic, long-range planning aligned with goals set by the Board and strengthening current services to uphold the library’s longstanding commitment to excellence in serving the Martinsville Henry and Patrick County communities. This role calls for forward-thinking leadership rooted in established public library practices and sound financial stewardship. The Library Director will oversee all financial operations and investments, lead efforts to secure funding through grants and other opportunities, and present comprehensive reports on the library’s financial health, activities, and strategic direction. Additionally, the director will manage facility-related matters, including ongoing maintenance and planning for future infrastructure needs.
Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will engage collaboratively and effectively with the Library Board of Trustees, Municipality Administrators, staff, community members, and strategic partners. They will bring strong financial acumen and the ability to communicate clearly and succinctly. Demonstrating the highest standards of professionalism and ethical conduct, the next Library Director will have a thorough understanding of modern public library operations and public administration. This individual will be skilled at assessing community needs and developing responsive services and policies. As a dynamic leader, they will plan, organize, and oversee a diverse library system while fostering a positive and productive work environment. Responsibilities also include delegating tasks, managing staff schedules, and strategically planning organizational workflows to ensure long-term success.
Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited institution is required. Candidates must have professional library experience, including demonstrated leadership in library management or administration. A strong background in financial and budgetary oversight is also essential. Experience overseeing multiple facilities and reporting to a governing board is highly preferred. Additional desirable qualifications include expertise in grant writing, public administration, and community engagement.
Compensation:
The hiring salary range is $60,000 – $70,000, plus benefits package which includes retirement through the Virginia State Retirement System. Starting salary is negotiable dependent on experience and qualifications. Relocation stipend is also available.
