We asked DCLA Director of Advocacy, Neva Faulkner, what her advocacy priorities for DCLA are this year, and she answered!
As the DCLA Director of Advocacy, I am dedicated to advancing equitable opportunities for all residents of the District of Columbia, with a particular focus on expanding access to high-quality early childhood reading programs in Ward 7. Early literacy is a critical foundation for lifelong learning, yet many children in underserved communities face barriers that limit their ability to access strong educational resources. In my role, I work to champion policies, partnerships, and initiatives that ensure every child—regardless of zip code—has the support they need to build strong reading skills from the start. By collaborating with schools, families, and community organizations, I advocate for programs that close the literacy gap and empower young learners to reach their full potential.
Beyond early literacy, my advocacy extends to strengthening the fabric of our community by supporting non-profits that serve District residents. I actively engage with organizations that address essential needs such as food access, housing support, cultural enrichment, and health services. Through strategic partnership-building, resource-sharing, and community engagement, I help amplify the work of these nonprofits so they can better serve individuals and families across the District. I believe that thriving communities are built through collaboration, compassion, and sustained investment in local leadership.
In my role as DCLA Director of Advocacy, I am committed to elevating community voices, expanding equitable opportunities, and fostering a stronger, more inclusive District of Columbia—one where every resident has the resources and support to succeed.
