Position Description:
The DC Public Library system comprises 26 locations, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, which is the downtown central library. The Adult Services department, a public service unit within the Martin Luther King Jr. Library, provides resources for adult District residents.
DCPL will complete a significant renovation of the central library in the Fall, and the Adult Services Department Manager is charged with developing and implementing a new vision for operating in this dynamic new space. The Adult Services Department will lead the library in creating innovative programming and services that engage and encourage a love of reading; a passion for cultural enrichment; and a supportive, informed community. Particular focus will be on developing the library’s offerings in strategic areas that create more engaged customers.
The Adult Services Manager is part of the leadership team for the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, which will embrace a holistic approach to services and coordination of daily operations. To that end, the Adult Services Manager will focus on opportunities that integrate Adult Services in other offerings in the building. The manager will also work collaboratively with the systemwide Service Design and Engagement team and other key staff to ensure smooth operations and high-quality customer experiences.

Responsibilities:
-Responsible for the efficient and customer service-oriented operation of the Adult Services Department. Leads librarians in designing services and establishing partnerships for the location that align with community needs and the library’s strategic plan.
-Performs supervisory personnel functions within the department. Creates performance plans and writes performance evaluations for staff. Initiates personnel action as necessary and provides documentation to support such action.
-Interprets and assists with the development of DC Public Library policies in managing the Adult Services Department.
-Monitors the physical plant of the branch or library department, including all furniture, fixtures, and equipment. Reports problems to appropriate departments and initiates requests for equipment and supplies.
-Participates in training workshops, meetings, seminars, etc., directly related to professional development. Stays abreast of professional literature, trends and developments, through active participation in both local and national associations.
-Convenes regular meetings with staff to discuss procedures, rules and policies in order to achieve the goals and objectives of the branch.
-May serve on selection panels, interviewing job applicants for appointment to and promotion within the library system.
-Directs the professional development of staff and the orientation of new hires. Makes recommendations to supervisor on staff development and training needs.
-Assigns staff to areas of the collection that they are to develop and maintain.
-Represents library at community events and meetings throughout the community and serves as liaison to location’s Friends of the Library group.
Qualifications:
The incumbent must possess a Masters-Degree in Library Science from an ALA-accredited institution in addition to a minimum of three (3) years of experience:
- providing direct public service to adults in a library or educational setting.
- Supervising, training, developing and evaluating staff of diverse abilities.
- Designing and implementing improvements to processes, services, programs and initiatives.
- Facilitating and leading trainings on programs and services for adults
- Advising on principles of programming and services for adults, including implementation of best practices.
Experience serving diverse populations in a large urban environment preferred.
