    The North American Serials Interest Group (NASIG) is pleased to announce the beginning of the application cycle for its 2013 grants, awards, and scholarships to be awarded at the 2013 Annual Conference being held in Buffalo, New York, June 6-9, 2013.  Established in 1985, NASIG is an international organization committed to promoting communication and sharing of ideas among all people working with or concerned about serial publications.  More information about NASIG is available at http://www.nasig.org.

    John Riddick Student Grant

    Fritz Schwartz Education Scholarship

    A $3,000 scholarship and conference travel grant for a graduate student demonstrating excellence in scholarship and the potential for accomplishments in a serials career.

    Rose Robischon Scholarship

    John Merriman Joint NASIG/UKSG Award

    A $6,000 award supports two people, one from each association, and consists of travel to the sister conference, and accommodations for the duration of the conference. The purpose of this conference-swap is for people working at a practical level in e-resource management to learn and share experience at the UKSG and NASIG annual conferences.

    We congratulate D.C. Chief Librarian Ginnie Cooper for having the distinction of being the first librarian to receive the Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture from the American Institute of Architects. The award recognizes individuals who have furthered public awareness and appreciation of design excellence.

    Since becoming chief librarian of the D.C. Public Library in 2006, Cooper has recruited well-known architects to modernize and transform the city’s libraries into vibrant centers of activity. As a result of her efforts to revitalize the library system, the city’s public libraries respond to an exceedingly large number of residents who have taken a new interest in their local branches.

    From the ALA OITP:

    In an article published yesterday, Alan S. Inouye, director of the American Library Association’s Office for Information Technology Policy, announced that staff members from the ALA tech policy office will serve as guest writers for Digital Book World.

    The blog will feature various perspectives from the library community on the e-book marketplace, as well as the implications for libraries.

     

    “The once clear and sequential lines from author to publisher to distributor to retailer to end user are now blurred and promise to become re-invented,” Inouye said in the article. “These changes throughout the publishing ecosystem also portend strategic re-alignment for libraries and their roles in society. Revolutions indeed.”

    From the ALA Chapter Relations Office:

    As you may know, the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project is in the midst of a multi-year study exploring the changing role of libraries in the digital age, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Our major report on “Libraries, Patrons, and E-books” was enriched by many fascinating insights from the online panels that so many librarians participated in. (That report and many others are available online at a special section of our website at libraries.pewinternet.org.) We are now in the midst of the next phase of our research, and we need your help!

    Our current phase of research explores the experiences and expectations of library usersundefinedhow they use their libraries, what services they utilize the most, and what resources they wish their libraries offered. We’ve already completed a nationally representative phone survey of Americans 16 and older about their library habits, but we are also fielding a purely qualitative online questionnaire targeted at library staff members in order to provide more context about how libraries make decisions about services and programming.

    This questionnaire is for any and all staff members at public libraries. It briefly discusses various types of services and resources, and invites you to share your thoughts about the current (and future) state of libraries. The questionnaire is available at:

    Gallaudet University President T. Alan Hurwitz will donate 25 books to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library on behalf of an anonymous donor to commemorate deaf history, deaf culture, American Sign Language, and the university's upcoming 150th anniversary. 

    The event is in celebration of Clerc-Gallaudet Week, honoring Laurent Clerc and Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet who founded the first school for the deaf in America. Gallaudet University was named after Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet.

    Following the donation and brief program, editors and contributors of "Deaf American Prose: 1980-2010" will hold a panel discussion and reading.

    The DCLA Executive Board voted November 15 to sign the ALA Joint Statement on E-Content Pricing. This joint statement, issued by 40 state chapters (and growing) is in opposition to the practices of publishers and distributors that have established unfair pricing in the sale of ebooks to libraries.

    With sadness we report the death of Barbara Webb, former DC Public Library Director of Neighborhood Libraries who worked at DCPL from early 2003 – 2006. Barbara most recently worked in Montgomery County. Barbara died Friday, November 9 at home. She had been in hospice care. The service will be on Saturday, December 1st at 3:00 p.m. at St. Columba Episcopal Church, 4201 Albemarle Street Washington D.C. 20016. Barbara asked that any memorial contributions be made to the local Animal Rescue service of one's choice.

    The DC Metro area was spared the worst of Hurricane/Super Storm Sandy, but New Jersey and New York were not as fortunate. 

    Please turn to the ALA's Helping United States Libraries After Disasters (http://www.ala.org/offices/cro/getinvolved/helpinglibraries) for information on how to donate funds to help New Jersey and New York libraries affected by Hurricane Sandy. 

    If any of your libraries were damaged by the storm, contact the American Library Association to see if the organization can help in any way toward recovery. Contact the Chapter Relations Offce: Michael Dowling at 312-280-3200 or Don Wood at 312-280-2429.

    The DCLA Executive Board has appointed Sharon Lenius as the 2012-13 DCLA Joint Spring Workshop (JSW) representative. Sharon is a retired federal librarian, and previously chaired the JSW Committee in the 1990s. Sharon has also served as a DCLA Executive Board Director. 

    The JSW is an annual educational program organized jointly by library associations throughout DC, including DCLA, the Law Library Society of DC (LLSDC), the Special Libraries Association DC Chapter (DCSLA), the American Society of Information Science Potomac Valley Chapter (ASIS&T PVC), and the Federal Libraries Information Coordinating Committee (FLICC). Leadership of the committee is rotated annually. DCLA will next chair in 2015. The JSW will be scheduled for April 2013. Watch the listserv and events calendar for announcements and registration.
