Music Librarian-DC Public Library
Position Description:
This position is within the Public Services unit of the District of Columbia Public Library system and serves as a Music Librarian. The position is responsible for professional functions that support the efficient operation and best use of the libraries.
The Library system comprises 26 locations, including the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, known as the downtown Central Library. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library plays a vital role as a source of open innovation and creative inspiration for District residents. The Adult Services Department offers programming, reference services, and library spaces and collections for District residents.
This position is located in the Adult Services Department and is responsible for music-focused collections, including circulating, reference, and digital material. The incumbent will offer engaging music programming and services and facilitate music-related initiatives throughout the library system.

Responsibilities:
- Serves as the Library’s lead specialist and advocate on music collections and programming
- Maintains and builds music-related collections in partnership with the library's Collections and Archival staff
- Cultivates relationships with the local music community and facilitates use of the library's spaces for performances and educational events; and
- Works with internal partners to connect music collections and performance to other library initiatives.
- Manages location’s physical music collection by using established processes and procedures for weeding materials, requesting new materials, and analyzing usage. May also assist in collection movement and maintenance by shelving and shelf-reading.
- Collaborates with manager and colleagues to optimize use of location by users
- Provides direct customer service to library customers (for example, answering basic and advanced informational, directional, technology, and referral questions; reader’s advisory, etc.) and assistance in using the library and its resources.
- Maintains familiarity with DCPL’s music collections and resources and various options for accessing them. Is able to instruct a library customer how to access any resource
- Assists in maintaining a welcoming and comfortable library environment by following DCPL Appearance Guidelines and enforcing DCPL Rules of Behavior, as needed
- Maintains awareness of community needs, including the needs of schools and other community institutions and organizations.
- Attends meetings, workshops, and trainings as assigned. May serve on committees and other working groups as assigned.
Education and Experience:
A Master’s degree in Library/ Information Science from an ALA (American Library Association) accredited graduate program plus at least 1 year of relevant experience working in directly and in-person with customers/clients of the children population or at least 1 Year of Specialized experience at the next lower grade level. Experience working in an urban public library preferred. Additionally, the following is required:
- Professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and techniques of public librarianship as gained through obtaining a Master’s degree in Library/Information Science, with coursework or practical experience related to public libraries.
- Experience providing excellent direct customer service various populations associated
- Experience designing, promoting, delivering, and evaluating public-facing programs and services
- Ability to exercise independent judgment in the application of policies, procedures, rules, or regulations in difficult or sensitive situations.
- Experience communicating effectively orally and in writing
- Experience using standard office productivity software, such as Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite, and familiarity with content management software, such as Sharepoint and Drupal.
