    Senior Library Assistant, Night/Weekend, Himmelfarb Health Sciences Library, The George Washington University

    Position Description:

    The Senior Library Assistant, Night Weekend performs specialized functional duties that assist in the routine operation and management of the Circulation Desk during the evenings and on weekends. Assists in the supervision and support of overnight library monitors (OLM). Maintains and updates circulation-related computer files. Responsible for responding to Library facilities emergencies. Responsible for the maintenance of loan equipment and public workstations. Provides any assistance needed to Reference Desk during evening hours. Hours: Sunday-Thursday (1:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.)

    Responds to routine problems and inquiries from the University community regarding Library policies and practices.

    Assists in staffing and supervising the Circulation Desk and enforces the library’s general policies and procedures during evening hours.

    Assists in hiring, training and scheduling for 11:30pm-8:00am shift of Overnight Library Monitors (OLM) and for identifying substitutes as needed; and provides backup for hiring, training, and scheduling of Circulation Desk Assistants.

    Provides basic reference assistance to users when the reference desk is closed. Includes assisting users with online catalog searches.

    Conducts weekly checks of all public workstations in the Library and creates maintenance report for SMHS IT. Maintains computer equipment for checkout.

    Provides basic support to Library’s 3D printing service, including initiation of print jobs and maintenance of supplies.

    Maintains Alma user records and supplies any necessary manual creation, deletion, and update of records in the system.

    Ensures all distance education materials are prepared for mailing on a timely basis.

    Produces and mails delinquent user and other reports as needed.

    Responsible for routines required for proper closing of the Library, in situations when closing occurs.

    Replenishes the supply of forms used at the Circulation Desk and maintains a file of master copies, as needed.

    Assists in training new desk assistants (OLMs) in routine circulation operations and any retraining required for more experienced OLMs.

    Monitors the operations of the access turnstile and performs floor checks during busy periods to enforce access policies. Maintains monthly access statistics as reported by the GWorld office.

    Keeps Associate Library Director informed of all evening problems and events through a written weekly and monthly report.

    Maintains an updated procedures and position manual accessible on shared drive, intranet or other system utilized to ensure its availability to all within the library.

    Coordinates deliveries to the Library.

    Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

    Minimum Qualifications:
    Qualified candidates will hold a high school diploma/GED plus 1.5 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    Bachelor’s degree
    Prior experience in a library setting
    Strong problem solving and decision-making skills based on sound reasoning and appropriate to library policies and procedures
    Ability to work independently and diplomatically with patrons and library staff
    Demonstrated proficiency using software such as Google Docs, Word, and Excel
    Experience adapting to new technology
