    Chesterfield County, Virginia (Richmond-Metro Area), a recognized leader and award-winning local government, is seeking an innovative, strategically focused, and community-minded leader who will lead, plan, direct and oversee the Chesterfield Public Library (CPL) system.

    The director provides executive leadership to CPL and leads, plans, directs and oversees day-to-day CPL programs and services as well as strategic visioning and planning for the department. The director is expected to:

    • Establish the goals and objectives for CPL and develop strategies and methods to enhance and encourage community engagement and volunteerism.
    • Plan, organize, direct, coordinate and administer the services and programs of a high volume, busy multi-branch public library system with a high public visibility.
    • Develop and maintain meaningful public service policies and operational practice.
    • Provide leadership in managing the daily operations of CPL by working collaboratively with the department staff to understand the needs of the department and deliver quality programs and services.
    • Implement library related information technology programs.
    • Work effectively and collaboratively with citizen support organizations, county departments, nonprofit organizations, governmental agencies, elected officials, other key community stakeholders and the public.
    • Manage fiscal operations include administering the budget, securing grants, or other funding for program and services; and monitoring performance standards and reporting requirements for grant funding.
    • Monitor legislative issues and provide policy guidance and direction for regional and state initiatives relating to public library systems.

    Applicants must possess a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a relevant field is required. American Library Association Accredited Master’s degree in library and information science is preferred. Possession of, or ability to acquire a Virginia State Professional Librarian Certification (Code of Virginia 42.1 – 15.1). A minimum of eight years of progressively responsible managerial and leadership experience in public sector (preferably local government) library administration including a minimum of three years in a supervisor/leadership capacity, or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Proven experience in the oversight, evaluation and improvement of library programs, services and technology. Diverse leadership experience in successful community engagement. Good driving record, pre-employment drug test and extensive background check required.
