    • Position Description:


    • Reporting Relationships Reports to the Foundation’s Executive Director with ongoing partnership and collaboration with the foundation’s Board of Directors in developing and implementing the Foundation’s annual fund campaign. Works closely with the Foundation’s Development Specialist and Part-time Hourly Development Assistant. Also collaborates with members of the Foundation Board Development Committee and other Foundation Board Directors. Frequent contact with donors, potential donors, branch staff and members of various library headquarter departments including marketing, public outreach, finance and digital media. Will contact individual, community and business donors, library trustees, community representatives, government officials, representatives of contractual services and other vendors.

      Supervisory Responsibility:  Directly supervises Development Specialist, PTH Development Assistant as well as volunteers who provide special event and other fundraising support

      Overall Position Purpose This is management level work responsible for developing and implementing the Foundation’s annual fund activities to include individual solicitations, direct mail, social media, e-mail and special events. This individual will accomplish the annual fund goals though identifying, cultivating, stewarding and soliciting current and potential donors. The ability to think and act strategically, work with a team of highly motivated staff and volunteers and handle deadlines is essential. This individual will also represent the Library Foundation by serving, as needed, on leadership teams for the Anne Arundel County Public Library (AACPL). 

      Minimum Qualifications:  Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management, Marketing, Public Relations or related field, supplemented by at least three years’ experience working in a non-profit, fundraising environment with managerial experience overseeing annual fund, special events, and/or donor cultivation programs or an equivalent combination of experience and training that has provided the knowledge, abilities, and skills listed below. Interest in obtaining Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) Certification is desired.

      Essential Duties:  The following are examples of the duties of this position.  The list is not exhaustive.  Certain conditions, e.g., economic constraints, staffing patterns or changes in Library goals and objectives, may necessitate changes to the duties described in this Position Description.

      Designs, oversees, and evaluates fundraising strategy to secure, sustain and grow philanthropic, low- to mid-range annual support for the library foundation through direct appeals (both in person and mail appeals), online efforts, and special events including the library foundation’s signature event, For the Love of the Library as well as manages periodic asset-building campaigns.

    •   Fundraising

    • Manage special events and the annual corporate sponsorship program
    •  Development

    •  In coordination with Executive Director, develop and execute an annual development strategy
    • Support the library Foundation’s goals established and formulated by Executive Director and, in collaboration, strategize continued sustainable growth

      Work with and support the Foundation Board’s Development Committee as it sets and pursues goals

      Sustain, diversify, and grow the Foundation’s funding base through individual campaigns, donor cultivation, and Foundation and grants strategy

      Design and implement direct-mail and digital appeals to prospects and existing donors

      In partnership and collaboration with the Executive Director, cultivate new and engage existing donors and implement efforts to secure new and untapped resources to build the capacity of the library foundation to sustain growth and build off momentum

    • In coordination with Executive Director, devise strategies and activities that strengthen Board of Directors’ and other volunteers’ commitment, leadership and advocacy in support of the library’s growing services and need for private funding sources
    • Advance efforts to reach out to current library staff and retirees to support and strengthen the mission of the library foundation and cultivate a culture of philanthropy
    • %        C.  Supervision
    •  Instructs and guides staff in the objectives, policies and procedures of AACPL and in accordance with its vision/mission and goals 

      Plans, assigns/delegates and sets work priorities for staff as appropriate 

      Schedules regular meetings with staff and communicates updates regarding branch/department and/or system changes 

      Observes, coaches, evaluates and documents performance and recognizes staff contributions in accordance with AACPL policies 

      Assesses, identifies and coordinates staff training and development needs  

      Provides counsel and support to staff in acquiring resources, resolving complaints and meeting their department/branch and personal development objectives 

      Consults with immediate supervisor or Branch Manager/ Department Head and/or Human Resources regarding personnel concerns   

      May collaborate with staff in planning branch/department objectives and goals 

      Maintains a working knowledge of duties, policies and processes in order to fill in for or assist staff when needed 

      Demonstrates and acts in accordance with library core values and serving as a role model and mentor for staff

    • Assists with the planning, research and implementation of projects that fall outside of          routine work responsibilities

    • Accountabilities (include, but are not limited to the following):

    • 1.    Meets development objectives as established by supervisor.
    • 2.    Maintains good working relations with Library and Anne Arundel County staff and representatives of other agencies.

      3.    Performs work with a high degree of accuracy and in strict adherence to established schedules and standards.

      Working Conditions:

       

      1.    Physical Demands:  High volume of office work; must have the physical ability to perform daily activities from a desk and to operate a computer and other office equipment. Typical workday of 9 am to 5 pm with weekend and evening hours for special events.  Ability to travel throughout Anne Arundel County representing the mission and vision of the Library Foundation.

      2.    Emotional Demands:  Some pressure related to bi-weekly and year-end deadlines and periods of high-volume activity. Work is cyclical with significantly greater workload at certain times.

    • 3.    Physical Environment:  Typical office environment. Some fluctuations in building temperature related to HVAC problems can cause periods of uncomfortable heat or cold.
    • 4.    Mental Demands:  This is responsible and varied work requiring the exercise of initiative, judgment and discretion.  New assignments and changes in procedures and policies are received in general outline and employees are expected to proceed with minimal supervision.  Advice and assistance are normally available.
    • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • 1.    Technical proficiency in a variety of computer applications (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, and data management/CRM systems, preferably The Raiser’s Edge)

    2.    Proven leadership and management skills to motivate staff and volunteers in achieving organizational objectives

    3.    Strong writing and speaking capabilities

    4.    Strategic and analytical capabilities to use qualitative and quantitative input in driving organizational learning and success.

    5.    A strong commitment to, and understanding of, donor recognition and stewardship

    6.    Experience in hiring, supervision, assessment, and training of staff

    7.    Familiarity with the Anne Arundel County Public Library and the library foundation and commitment to overall mission

    8.    Good interpersonal skills and comfort with various constituencies

    9.    Ability to work both individually and as part of a team

    10. Flexible, ability to adjust to changing circumstances

    11. Familiarity with public libraries, particularly in the areas of customer service and culture

    12. Comfortable working with an organization in transition and growth with limited resources
