DCLA is the 2015 recipient of the Ann Heidbreder Eastman Grant from the DC Chapter of the Women’s National Book Association.

This is a one-time $500 grant to “support librarian professional development or training offered by an official library association.” Each year, a chapter of the Women’s National Book Association is chosen to present the Eastman Grant to a local library association of their choosing. DCLA is very grateful to be selected by the DC chapter of the WNBA for this honor.

Ann Heidbreder Eastman, a past president of the Women’s National Book Association, served on ALA Council and was President of LLAMA (Library Leadership and Management Association of ALA) 1987-88.

This $500 grant will be awarded to one DCLA Member to attend a library conference of their choosing in 2016. The DCLA Member must already possess a MLS/MIS degree, and have not attended the selected conference previously. Conference choice is restricted to those sponsored by ALA or its divisions (e.g. PLA, ACRL or AASL). Preference will be given to applicants who will not be receiving full conference funding from their employers.

The deadline for the receipt of applications for the Eastman grant is Monday, November 30, 2015.  Application and instructions are available at: http://www.dcla.org/eastmangrant

    Dear DCLA Colleagues,

We are thrilled to announce that the national launch of ALA’s new multi-year public awareness campaign, Libraries Transform, will take place in Washington, D.C. on October 29, 2015. Libraries Transform showcases the power of libraries of all types to transform people’s lives, the communities in which they serve, as well as how libraries and the profession itself are evolving to meet these needs.

We are already working with the D.C. Public Library, the Smithsonian library and a number of other local libraries about special events on launch day, but we’re hoping that all DCLA libraries will join us in the launch. As part of the launch that day, teams will also be roving the streets of DC, passing out free coffee, swag and spreading the word about the transformational role of libraries.

To help you celebrate the launch in your library, we would be delighted to provide those participating in the launch with a free 3’x 5’ Libraries Transform banner that can raise curiosity and engage the public in learning about how your library is transforming your community - and your user’s lives. As part of the day’s events, we are asking you to display the banner on the exterior of your library, take photos and share via social media. Many more ways to get involved, ideas on how to make the campaign work for your library and information on the campaign “Because” statements can be found at: http://www.librariestransform.org/toolkit/.

If you would like to be part of the launch and receive a banner (or if you have a question), please contact Megan McFarlane at mmcfarlane@ala.org by October 9, 2015.

We hope that you will join us in this great opportunity to raise public awareness of libraries and all we do!

Julius C. Jefferson Jr., DCLA President

    Sari Feldman, ALA President

On October 29th, 2015, ALA’s new public awareness campaign, "Libraries Transform," will launch in Washington, D.C. and in libraries across the country. We need your help in making it a success! The purpose of the new campaign is to increase public awareness of the ways that libraries of all types transform people’s lives and our communities; shift perception of the library from “obsolete” or “nice to have” to essential; and energize library professionals and external advocates to influence local, state and national decision-makers and increase support for libraries of all types.

Click here to see a message about the campaign from ALA President, Sari Feldman.
