    The District of Columbia Library Association is looking for nominees to serve on the Board for 2013/2014 in the following positions:

     

    Vice President/President-Elect  (3-year progessive term)

    Secretary/Communications Director (2-year term)

    Membership Secretary (interim 1-year term)

    Director (2-year term with a focus on advocacy)

    Director (2-year term with a focus on career & leadership development)

    ALA Council Representative (3-year term to begin after the 2013 annual conference)

    Today (May 8) is National Library Legislative Day (NLLD), and we end it with great news for DC libraries. This year's DC Delegation included DC Library Association (DCLA) President Jacqueline Protka, DCLA NLLD 2013 Coordinator Mario Ascencio, and member Lesliediana Jones (GWU). We trekked all over the Wilson Building and up to Capitol Hill. We got sunburned. We were drenched by rain. We emerge victorious.

    Every single person we spoke with shared his or her support of libraries, and in most cases a personal story of how libraries and librarians positively affected their lives. We thanked them all for their support of DC Public Libraries, and asked for their continued support. We also urged additional funding for DC Public School libraries, stressing the need for a full-time, certified school librarian in every DC school and a ratio of 20 books per student, without taking funds away from DCPL to achieve these goals.

    We end the day on a positive note. Eleanor Holmes Norton's legislative aide in charge of education, Jason Spear, pledged his and Norton's full support for House legislation to benefit libraries and their users, including the Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA), the only federal program exclusively for libraries.

    Most importantly, CM David Grosso shared the breaking news that CM David Catania, Chair of the Committee on Education, has identified funds to place a full time, certified school librarian in all DC public schools with more than 300 students, without cutting funds from DCPL to do so. Tomorrow Catania will submit the Committee on Education's FY14 budget with this change reflected.

    The DCLA Board encourages all DCLA members and supporters of libraries to participate in National Library Legislative Day. There is still time to join the DC Delegation. We will be visiting both Capitol Hill and the Wilson Building. Find more information and link for registration here

    The DCLA Board is seeking volunteers for a Finance Committee to help the Board achieve key strategies in our 2012-2014 Strategic Plan. The Finance Committee will assist the Treasurer in monitoring the financial state of the Association and will advise on future financial strategies and policies.

    Objectives for the 2013-14 year will include the following:

    1. Research and implement a new investment plan for the Association
    2. Refresh the DCLA bookkeeping workflow
    3. Review and update the Association's financial policies (DC non-profit status, tax filing, annual dues structure, etc.) and update the DCLA finances handbook
    4. Make recommendations for the annual budget
    5. Consider requests for funding from committees, interest groups, and program organizers

    A position on this committee would require a commitment of a few hours per month for both assigned individual tasks and group meetings.

    List of Candidates by State

    Note: In 2008, the American Library Association began holding its election exclusively online. The only exception is for members with disabilities and without Internet access.  These individuals may obtain a paper ballot by contacting ALA customer service. Those without Internet access at home or at work can easily access the election site by visiting their local public (or in many instances, academic or school) libraries. The election site is also accessible on a Smartphone.

    Eligible members are sent their voting credentials via email in mid-March. Any individuals whose emails bounce will be sent a “snail-mail” letter with their voting credentials. To be eligible to vote, individuals must be members in good standing as of January 31, 2013.

    Voting in the 2013 ALA election will begin at 9:00 a.m. Central Time (US) on March 19, 2013. Ballots close at 11:59 p.m. on April 26, 2013.
